Abstract

This research investigates the information literacy competencies and knowledge base of 50 differently abled research scholars affiliated with the Banaras Hindu University, with particular emphasis on their engagement with library resources and methodologies for information retrieval. A significant proportion of participants 62% (n= 50) fall within the 25–35 age demographic, with male scholars constituting 58% (n= 50) of the sample. A notable 60% (n= 50) of respondents reported making daily visits to the library, predominantly for research-related endeavors (50%), followed by activities such as book borrowing (24%). Articles were identified as the most frequently utilized resource (64%), while nearly half (48%) depended on the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) for conducting document searches. An impressive 98% (n= 50) of participants indicated familiarity with the concept of information literacy, and 90% (n= 50) disclosed regular engagement with computer technology. Search engines were identified as the most preferred instruments for information retrieval (60%), trailed by open-access journals (20%). For comprehensive topics, journal articles (68%) emerged as the source of choice. Respondents primarily sought guidance from library personnel (28.9%) and faculty members (27%). Despite the high level of awareness, there exist deficiencies in advanced search capabilities and the proficient utilization of digital resources. These results underscore the scholars' dependence on contemporary tools and their pronounced inclination towards research activities, thereby highlighting the necessity for specialized training programs aimed at enhancing their digital literacy and optimizing resource utilization.
