Historical Background of Indian Languages

Abstract

The history tradition of Indian languages has been very mature and ancient and the study of which is available to us even before the Vedic period, first in symbolic form, then in oral form and then in written form. In the Vedic period, six Vedangas – Shiksha, Kalpa, Nirukta, Vyakaran and Jyotish were composed for the study of Vedas. From which it is known that the history-tradition of Indian languages has been very ancient. Among the scholars who contributed significantly in its initial development, the names of Shakalya, Gargya, Panini, Vyadi, Katyayan, Patanjali etc. are noteworthy.
