Towards Universalisation

Abstract

This study attempts to show that a goddess temple exists at the center of local rural culture, which is situated in the belief systems of the people. It is famous due to its local specialties, which is also a center of faith, emotion and attraction for people from faraway places. The role of local gods and goddesses can be highlighted in the continuity of rural culture. The increasing popularity of this place is the place for fulfilment of wishes and desires. Besides, the special geographical location and the increasing crowd of devotees day by day is increasing the process of its development and expansion. Thus, from a policy point of view, any developmental work should be rooted in local traditions. Here, in the process of expansion of small tradition, an attempt has been made to explain the conditions moving towards universalisation. People come here to enjoy darshan, worship and sightseeing. Along with faith and emotions, people also develop attachment towards the geographical place. This article surveys rural and urban people's complex relationship with the local goddess, spanning the past and present.
